The best time to talk about lighting is before the ceiling contractor starts. Once gypsum is up and painted, recessed track, profile coves and star ceilings become far harder to add.
Inside a new villa

- Built into the false ceiling so the lighting sits flush — the channels must be in the ceiling drawings.
- Double-height lounges and entrances
- A chandelier, ring pendant or linear feature scaled to the void, with narrow-beam downlights to reach the floor.
- Stairs
- Step lights or a continuous profile, with a motion-sensing stair controller if wanted.
- Bedrooms and home cinemas
- Warm cove lighting and, increasingly, fibre optic starry ceilings.
Facade, garden and pool

- Wall washers and up-and-down wall lights on the elevation, spots on columns and the entrance.

- Bollards or pole lights, spaced so their pools of light meet.

- IP68 underwater lights on low voltage, in white or RGB.
- Boundary and gate
- Pillar lights and wall lights — solar where running cable is difficult.
Planning with your contractor
- Share the architectural and ceiling drawings early — we mark up fittings room by room.
- Confirm cut-out sizes and channel widths before the ceiling is built.
- Decide what dims and what switches together, so it can be wired that way.
- Order outdoor fittings with the right IP rating for each position.
- Deliveries can follow the construction stages.
