About Magnetic Track Lights
Magnetic track lighting is a slim low-voltage rail that lights click into and can be moved along by hand. One track can carry spotlights, linear lights and grille lights together, which is why it has replaced the grid of downlights in so many modern living rooms and shops.
This category has the track itself, the lights that fit it, and the power supplies that run it. They are parts of one system and should be bought together.
The parts of a system
- Track — the aluminium rail, in surface-mounted, recessed or suspended versions.
- Lights — spot heads for accents, linear lights for general light, grille lights for low-glare downlighting.
- Power supply — converts mains to the track's low voltage; sized to the total wattage on the track.
- Connectors — straight joiners and corners for L-shapes and rectangles.
Surface, recessed or suspended
Recessed track sits flush in a false ceiling and has to be planned before the ceiling is built. Surface-mounted track fixes onto a finished or concrete ceiling, so it is the choice for renovations; an ultra-thin profile keeps it discreet. Suspended track hangs on wires over a table, counter or double-height space.
Planning the layout
Decide what you want lit — seating, a TV wall, artwork, a dining table — and run the track where it can reach them. Use linear lights for the general level and spots for emphasis. Add up the wattage of every light and choose a power supply with about 20% to spare, placed where it can be reached later.
Common questions
Can I move the lights myself?
Yes. The lights are held magnetically and run on low voltage, so they can be slid along the track or lifted off and repositioned without tools.
Can magnetic track be fitted to a concrete ceiling?
Yes, with surface-mounted track. Recessed track needs a false ceiling.
Do I need one power supply per track?
One power supply can feed a run of track as long as the total wattage of the lights stays within its rating. Long or separate runs may need more than one.
Can I mix lights from another brand?
Usually not. Track and lights are made to fit each other; buy both from the same range.
