About Chandeliers & Pendant Lights

A chandelier or pendant is the one light in a room chosen to be looked at. It hangs where people gather — over a dining table, in a double-height foyer, above a reception desk — and sets the character of the space before it is even switched on.

The range runs from single pendants in metal, cement and jute to linear and ring pendants and crystal chandeliers.

Hanging height

• Over a dining table: the bottom of the fitting about 75–90 cm above the table top.
• Over a kitchen island: about 75–85 cm above the counter, in a row of two or three.
• In a room people walk through: at least 2.1 m clear underneath.
• In a stairwell or double-height foyer: centred in the void, visible from both floors.

Choosing the size

Over a table, a pendant or row of pendants should be about half to two-thirds of the table's width or length. A linear pendant suits a rectangular table; a round chandelier or ring suits a round table or a square room.

It should not be the only light

Decorative fittings are rarely bright enough on their own, and look better dimmed. Put the chandelier on its own dimmer and let downlights or cove lighting carry the general level.
