Buying Guide

About Ceiling Lights

These are fittings that sit on or just below the ceiling and are meant to be seen: round and ring lights, flush-mounted drums, and ceiling features. Where a downlight hides, a ceiling light is part of the room's design.

Flush, semi-flush or suspended

A flush fitting sits tight to the ceiling and suits rooms of ordinary height. A suspended ring or drum needs more height — leave at least 2.1 m clear beneath it in a walkway, and hang it lower only over a table. Many round fittings can be mounted either way.

Getting the size right

A common rule of thumb: add the room's length and width in feet, and that number in inches is a sensible diameter for a central fitting. A 12 × 14 ft room suits a light of roughly 26 inches (65 cm). In a large room, two or three smaller fittings often work better than one.

Common questions

Is one ceiling light enough for a room?

A central light gives general light but leaves the edges flat. Pair it with wall lights, lamps or cove lighting on a separate switch.

Can a ring light be dimmed?

Many can, depending on the driver. Ask us which dimming options a model supports.
