About LED Strip Lights
LED strip is a flexible tape of LEDs with an adhesive back. It is the light source behind cove ceilings, under-cabinet lighting, shelves, signage and most profile lighting.
Strips differ in voltage, LED type, density and protection, and choosing the wrong one is the usual reason a cove looks dotted or dim.
What the numbers mean
- 2835, 5050 — the size of each LED. 2835 is the standard for white light; 5050 is used for RGB.
- LEDs per metre — 120 or more gives a smoother line; double-row strip gives more light still.
- COB — a continuous phosphor line with no visible dots at all.
- 12V or 24V — low voltage, needs a power supply; 24V allows longer runs.
- 220V — runs from the mains for long runs, with no separate driver.
- IP rating — IP20 for dry indoor use; a waterproof strip for kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors.
Choosing a strip
For a cove you look at directly, use COB or high-density strip, preferably in a profile. For hidden coves, standard density is fine. Pick one colour temperature for a room, and buy the whole quantity together so the white matches.
Power supply
Multiply the strip's watts per metre by the length, add about 20%, and choose a power supply of at least that rating at the strip's voltage. Long runs should be fed from both ends or in sections to avoid the far end dimming.
Common questions
How long can an LED strip run from one power supply?
Typically about 5 m for 12V and 10 m for 24V before brightness drops; longer runs are fed in sections.
Can LED strip be cut?
Yes, at the cut marks printed on the strip.
Which strip for a ceiling cove?
A high-density or COB strip in 3000K or 4000K. If the strip itself is visible, put it in a profile.
Do I need a profile?
Not for a hidden cove, but a profile improves the look and the life of the strip wherever it can be seen.
