About LED Facade Lighting

Facade lighting is what makes a building read at night. It washes walls with light, picks out columns and edges, and on commercial buildings can carry colour and movement.

This category brings together wall washers, linear facade lights, spot and flood lights, pixel lighting, and the power supplies and controllers that run them.

The main techniques

  • Wall washing — a linear washer at the base or top spreads even light over a surface.
  • Grazing — a fitting close to the wall rakes light across it to show texture in stone or brick.
  • Accenting — narrow-beam spots pick out columns, arches and details.
  • Outlining — linear or flexible profile traces edges and rooflines.
  • Media and colour — addressable pixel lights and RGBW fixtures create changing effects.

Choosing fittings

Everything must be rated IP65 or higher. Match the beam to the height of the surface: a narrow beam throws light far up a tall wall, a wide beam suits a low one. Warm white flatters stone and brick; cooler white suits glass and metal cladding.

Control

Single-colour facades need only a timer or photocell. RGBW and pixel schemes need a controller — DMX512 for larger installations — and a power supply sized for the whole run. These are best designed as one system.

Common questions

What is a wall washer?

A linear fitting that throws an even sheet of light up or down a wall.

Can facade lighting change colour?

Yes, with RGBW or addressable fittings and a matching controller.

Can you design the lighting for a building?

Send elevations or photos and the effect you want, and we will propose fittings and a quotation.
