About Down Lights
A downlight is a fitting set into or onto the ceiling that throws light downward. It is the most common light in homes and offices, and the one most often chosen badly — too many, too bright, and all the same.
The range here covers COB downlights with a focused beam, SMD and flat-panel downlights with a wide soft spread, adjustable heads, and surface-mounted versions for ceilings that cannot be cut.
COB or SMD?
A COB downlight has one concentrated light source behind a reflector or lens. It gives a defined beam with clear shadows and is set back in the fitting, so glare is low — good for living rooms, feature walls and retail. An SMD or panel downlight has many small LEDs behind a diffuser and gives a broad, even wash — good for kitchens, corridors, offices and bathrooms.
Choosing the size and spacing
- Match the fitting to the ceiling cut-out: cut-out sizes differ between models, so confirm the model before the ceiling is cut.
- Higher ceilings need more output or a narrower beam, not simply more fittings.
- As a starting point, space downlights 1 to 1.5 m apart and keep them about 60 cm off the walls.
- Use an adjustable downlight where the light needs to be aimed at a wall or object.
- Near showers and sinks, choose a fitting rated IP44 or higher.
Colour temperature
3000K for living rooms and bedrooms, 4000K for kitchens and work areas, 6500K only where a very cool light is wanted. Keep every downlight in a room the same.
Common questions
How many downlights do I need in a room?
It depends on the room size, ceiling height and the output of the fitting. Send us the dimensions and we will work out a layout rather than guess.
What if my ceiling is solid concrete?
Use a surface-mounted downlight, which fixes directly to the ceiling with no cut-out.
What does anti-glare mean on a downlight?
The light source is recessed deep in the fitting, so you see the light it throws rather than the bright LED itself.
Are these downlights dimmable?
Some models are, with a compatible dimmer or driver. Check the product, or ask us which dimming method a model supports.
