About Surface Mounted Lights

Surface-mounted fittings fix directly onto the ceiling or wall instead of being recessed into it. They are the answer wherever there is no false ceiling: concrete slabs, basements, older houses and rented spaces.

What to look for

  • Depth — a slim fitting reads as part of the ceiling; a deep one becomes a feature.
  • A diffuser that spreads light evenly, since the fitting is in plain view.
  • How the cable reaches it: surface wiring needs trunking or a neat route.

Common questions

Can I replace recessed downlights with surface ones?

Yes, where the ceiling cannot be cut. A surface panel downlight gives the same soft light as a recessed panel.

Do surface lights look bulky?

Slim surface panels are only a few centimetres deep. Choosing white on a white ceiling makes them recede.
