About LED Panels
An LED panel is a flat fitting that lights evenly across its whole face. It replaced the fluorescent troffer in offices, classrooms and clinics because it gives comfortable, shadow-free light for long hours at a fraction of the power.
Match the panel to the ceiling
- T-grid (drop) ceiling: a panel that lays into the grid, 2×2 ft or 1×4 ft.
- Metal clip-in (Dampa) ceiling: a clip-in panel made to fit that system.
- Solid or gypsum ceiling: a recessed panel downlight, or a panel in a surface-mounting frame.
- Feature positions: a panel can also be suspended on wires.
What to compare
Look at lumens and lumens per watt rather than wattage alone, at the colour temperature (4000K is standard for offices), and at whether the diffuser is made not to yellow. For rooms with screens, a low-glare panel is worth having.
Common questions
What size is a 2×2 panel?
About 600 × 600 mm, made to fit a standard ceiling grid. A 1×4 panel is about 300 × 1200 mm.
Can a panel be fitted to a plain ceiling?
Yes, using a surface-mounting frame, or by choosing a surface-mounted panel downlight.
Which colour temperature for an office?
4000K natural white is the usual choice. 6500K is cooler and can feel harsh over a full working day.
