About Solar Lighting
A solar light carries its own panel and battery, charges during the day and switches on at dusk. Nothing is wired to the mains, so it can go where running a cable would be costly or impossible, and it keeps working through load-shedding.
Where solar works well — and where it does not
Solar suits boundary walls, farmhouses, gardens, car parks, streets inside housing schemes, and any site without a convenient supply. It is less suited to places that need strong light all night after several overcast days, or positions shaded by trees or buildings: the panel needs direct sun for most of the day.
What to compare
- The light output in lumens, not the wattage printed on the box.
- Battery capacity, which decides how many hours it runs.
- Whether the panel is built in (all-in-one) or separate, so it can be angled to the sun.
- Motion sensing, which saves the battery by dimming until someone approaches.
- IP rating — IP65 or higher for anything exposed.
Common questions
How long does a solar light stay on?
It depends on the battery, the light level and how much sun the panel had. Many run dusk to dawn in a dimmed mode and brighten on movement. Check the run time stated for the model.
Do solar lights work in winter or on cloudy days?
They charge less on short or overcast days, so they run for fewer hours. Placing the panel in full, unshaded sun matters most.
What is an all-in-one solar street light?
The panel, battery and LED are in a single housing on top of the pole, which makes it quick to install. In an all-in-two or all-in-three design they are separate parts.
