About Fibre Optic & Star Ceiling Lights
A fibre optic ceiling turns a bedroom, lounge or home cinema ceiling into a night sky. Each star is the tip of a thin optical fibre; all the fibres lead back to one light engine, so there is no electricity or heat in the ceiling itself.
This category has complete star ceiling kits, the light engines and shooting-star engines that drive them, fibre cable, and fibre features such as curtains and chandeliers.
What a star ceiling is made of
- Light engine — the LED source, placed somewhere accessible, often with a twinkle wheel and colour control.
- End-glow fibre — carries light to a point at its tip; each fibre is one star.
- Side-glow fibre — glows along its length, for outlines and pool edges.
- Meteor engine — fires a line of fibres in sequence for a shooting star.
What makes it look real
Use more than one fibre diameter so some stars are brighter than others, space them irregularly rather than in a grid, and give them a dark surface to sit in. The stars fade when other lights are on, so put the rest of the room's lighting on separate switches.
Before you install
It is far easier to fit the fibres before the ceiling is closed and painted. Decide the area, the number of stars, where the light engine will sit (it needs power, ventilation and access), and whether you want twinkle, colour change or shooting stars.
Common questions
Is a fibre optic ceiling safe?
Yes. The fibres carry only light. The only electrical part is the light engine, which sits outside the ceiling.
Can it be fitted to an existing ceiling?
It can, but every fibre needs a hole and a route back to the light engine, so it is simplest during a new false ceiling or a renovation.
How many stars do I need?
It depends on the area and how dense you want the sky. Send us the ceiling size and we will recommend a kit.
Can I see a star ceiling first?
Our online Light Lab opens on a starry sky ceiling, and you can ask at the showroom to see the fibre and light engines.
